HERS raters are special inspectors certified the California Energy Commission (CEC) to rate homes in California according to the Home Energy Rating System (HERS). These ratings include field verification and diagnostic testing to determine energy efficiency levels among residential and commercial buildings for duck efficiency, envelope leakage, refrigerant charge verification, and building insulation for compliance with current building efficiency standards.
How long will a HERS test take?
The time we will spend in your home or business depends on what climate zone you are in. Each climate zone requires different tests. On average, we will spend about an hour in the home or business. If you want a more detailed time, please feel free to call or email us.
What do I need to do to obtain a HERS certification?
Your home or business will need to pass a few different tests to insure your home/business is not leaking air out of the ducting and the HVAC work was done properly. What does this mean to you? Having leaks and equipment not working properly will only increase your homes energy thus causing your energy bill to be much higher than it should and your home/business not being energy efficient.
What is done to my home or commercial building/office to complete a HERS test?
This will depend on what climate zone you are in and what tests you will need to be done on your home. But to make this simple, we will need access to all registers (vents) and returns in your home. We will also need to access your air conditioning equipment and furnace.
Why do I need a HERS certificate?
By law, when a home or business has any work/repairs done to the air conditioning and heating, permits are required. When the work/repairs are completed and before a city inspector comes to sign off that everything is following state guidelines and laws, a HERS rater is required to test the home and certified that the proper equipment that you paid for was installed, the work was done properly and the home is not leaking and wasting energy or your money. Once this is completed and your home/business passes, the HERS rater will provide you with a certificate to give the inspector so the home can be passed and the job can be completed.
What if the home/business does not pass the HERS test?
Not passing a completed HERS test does happen on occasion and when it does, you will be happy because this may have been a small overlook that potentially could cause you a larger energy bill and dust and irritants inside your home. If this does happen, we immediately contact the installing contractor and will work with them to schedule the necessary repairs. Once the repairs are made, Cal Star Energy will attempt the HERS rating process again. We will do this until the home or business passes.
